Subject 5: Lantern Set

You know how when you go to Japanese restaurants you can order set menus –  ie sushi set, sashimi set, tempura set, pork katsu set, beef teriyaki set.  Well, here is my Lantern Set.  This is the only place where my lantern set can be seen together because all but the latest two drawings are in other people’s homes.
I have drawn  multiple different lanterns over the years but the six drawings in THIS set are the same two lanterns shown in different lights, seasons and years.

Here they are from newest to oldest:  (click on images to enlarge)

  2. Hi Julie,
I just saw your comment on my blog where I’d posted your drawing Nightfall, it’s great to hear from you and about this piece! Thanks for taking the time to enlightening me about it, it’s nice to hear what’s actually behind the drawing, and interesting to see the differences with my interpretations.

I think I’ve seen that red lantern with a bird on it (and fell in love with it), in a narrow street buzzing with life and bars near (or in?) Gyon. A lovely place, your lanterns do it justice. I love the gentle blur you achieve in your artwork, it gives a real atmosphere which to me suits Japan.

Thanks for passing by, and happy creating!

    • Hi Clarice, it was a lovely surprise to come across your blog post. When I saw the word “Nightfall” I thought, “I’ve never called a drawing ‘Nightfall'”. But when I checked back in my records, there it was. Funny how I could have so completely forgotten the title I’d chosen.
Right now I’m STILL working on Kyoto subject matter and will have an entire exhibition of Kyoto drawings in September. Kyoto and Paris are my favourite places to draw.
Thank you so much for drawing inspiration from one of my pictures.
