Go Around Again
15th September 2015 was second day of Katsutomo-san’s Erikae. A few photographers and I accompanied her on ’round 2′ as she paid her respects around Gion.
Just like coming out on stage; but the stage was the street.
Here she was; relaxed and happy.
For a while Katsutomo-san stood in front of her Okiya posing for photos.
We followed Katsutomo-san and her Otokoshi as they did the rounds.
This was a pleasant stroll with a few photographers (both amateur and professional) – as opposed to a mob of paparazzi.
Tsurui Okiya is at the end of this tiny lane.
This is the café where there is always a break in proceedings for refreshments. My reflection selfie made it into this photo.
I forgot to say that Otokoshi nipped into the Okiya to get a wahigasa for Katsutomo-san. I was delighted as this is a very photogenic accessory. (ps a parasol)
Wahigasa and lantern juxtaposition. Nice.
Another ‘selfie’ reflection sidled in to the photo. (I never notice these things until later.)
Circle and partially folded circle.
Crossing Shirakawa stream.
Through traditional Gion streets…
Circle with globe
This was a very hot day like the first day of the Erikae walk. The wahigasa was very much appreciated by its owner.
Composition with red circles and yellow rectangles.
Framed
Back on Shijo-dori. Passers-by were happy to see such a lovely Geiko.
Katsutomo-san folded and unfolded her wahigasa a few times just here to give us photographic opportunities.
Thank you, Katsutomo-san, for a wonderful two hours. I wish you every success as Geiko-san.

I hope you clicked on the photos to enlarge them.
Beautiful photographs of a lovely and elegant subject.
Thank you…and very true regarding the subject.
A beautiful more natural lady. All your photos wonderful as usual Julie. x. Tina.
Thank you, Tina. Thank you for staying tuned in to my blog.
Lovely photos of a lovely girl! I especially like the photo of her with her back turned to us and her face in profile with the parasol up and the photographers in the background.
That is a compelling image, isn’t it, Cousin. That one might end up being source material for a drawing.
Absolutely fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
I love to share when people look – so thank you for looking, Diane – and for taking the time to tell me you liked it.
Some really wonderful photos Julie, and as always a great story, can’t wait to see the drawings from these days. Karen
I was too overwhelmed to start drawing from these so the first drawing I have begun is from my June 2014 trip. I will get there – eventually!
I particularly like the images where modern day collides with the classic imagery – plenty of metaphors! The wahigasi is a great accessory and can be used to enhance a composition in so many ways. I can understand with this wealth of material how hard it is to get started on a drawing!
Exactly; like a feast that one is afraid to take a single bite from.
A very nice analogy! Now you just have to get very hungry and plunge in!
Hi Julie,
I enjoy reading your posts and seeing the wonderful photos but this one has knocked me out. Perhaps it’s the simple contrasts of the colours Katsutomo-san is wearing which make these photos stunning? I think the photo captioned “I forgot to say that Otokoshi nipped into the Okiya to get a wahigasa for Katsutomo-san ”, is my favourite. I hope you decide to draw from this set of photos and I’m keen to see the result.
On a different note, do you have any of the limited edition prints from “Rue de l’Echaudé” left?
Kind regards,
Lynne and Peter Stonehouse lynnepeter@westnet.com.au

Hi Lynne, I’m sure that I will draw from these photos – just not sure when. I never know what I’m going to draw next until the day I decide and start. I do have a handful of “Rue de l’Echaudé” left plus I have a new print. It is the print of my 2014 drawing “Step by Step“.
ps I just looked at the photo you are particularly liking here – and yes – that is one I am DEFINITELY looking at drawing.
